Zika virus is spreading especially in Latin America – travellers are advised to protect themselves against mosquito bites

The National Institute for Health and Welfare of Finland recommends that pregnant women consider postponing non-essential travel to areas where Zika virus transmission is ongoing.

The areas to which this recommendation applies can be found here: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - Zika-affected Areas

Please keep in mind that protection against mosquito bites is important to prevent contracting other diseases transmitted via mosquitos. Further information about protection against mosquite bites (in Finnish): Terveyskirjasto - Hyttysen pistoilta suojautuminen.

The Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the missions abroad are following the spread of the disease. In its travel advice bulletins, the Ministry provides links to the recommendations of the National Institute for Health and Welfare, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), and the World Health Organization (WHO). Travellers should always find out in advance about the infectious diseases and vaccination recommendations in the country of destination. The following authorities maintain information about these matters on their websites:
