Finland strongly condemns the nuclear test conducted by North Korea

Press release 146/2017
3 September 2017

Foreign Minister Timo Soini strongly condemns the nuclear test conducted by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea on 3 September. The nuclear test especially in the present circumstances of increased tensions is a very dangerous and irresponsible act that will further aggravate the situation. Claims that the test was the strongest conducted by North Korea so far and according to it´s own statement a hydrogen bomb are particularly alarming. North Korea's nuclear test was observed also in Finland, where the Institute of Seismology of the University of Helsinki works as a part of the international system monitoring observance of the nuclear test ban.

The nuclear test continues North Korea's series of grave violations of international obligations, which have become more common during this year. North Korea's earlier nuclear tests and several missile launches are indefensible violations of international agreements and obligations and extremely harmful for the stability of the region.

North Korea’s nuclear test is an outright violation of its international obligations to refrain from developing and testing nuclear weapons, in particular under UN Security Council Resolutions 1718, 1874, 2087, 2094, 2270, 2371, the IAEA’s Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), and the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). Finland joins the statement of EU High Representative Federica Mogherini, given on 3 September concerning the matter.

Finland considers that North Korea's recurring provocations indicate a serious disregard of the international community's appeals and urges North Korea to immediately refrain from actions that cause a serious threat to the security of the Korean Peninsula and increase tensions in the region.

North Korea must fully observe its international obligations, abandon its nuclear programme and commit to close cooperation with the international community, including the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and engagement in the dialogue aimed at the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula,
